Project- Dish Soap Bottle Apron

Today's project - Aprons for your dish soap bottles! I am not sure why a dish soap bottle needs an apron, but they are cute! My sister did point out that it keeps the bottle from slipping out of wet hands. I also tried to make it more functional by adding a pocket to the apron. You could either put a little plastic scraper, which I am forever misplacing, or use it to hold your jewelry while you wash dishes.

Materials Needed:
Scraps of fabric (not more then 1/8 yd)
Scraps of coordinating 1/4" bias tape (not more then 1yd)
Cut 2 apron pieces and one pocket piece.
(To make pocket piece measure 2 1/4" from bottom of apron, draw a straight line across. Either fold or cut on line.)
Sew bias tape along top of pocket edge.
Pin pocket in place.
Sew bias tape along top edge of apron, cutting off access.
Measure 2 1/2" from end of bias tape, mark with pin.
Sew bias tape from end to marking pin.
Insert top corner of apron into bias tape and sew.
Continue sewing bias tape around apron to opposite top corner.
Cut bias tape 2 1/2" from edge of apron.
Fold bias tape around first end of neck strap and continue sewing.

Measure a 12" piece of bias tape for tie. Pin in place matching centers.

Sew tie on, starting at end of bias tape.
Finished!

Favorite Sugar Cookies

Thanks to my dear cousins(they gifted the cookie cutters), I have some cute sugar cookies to share with you all! This is our all time favorite sugar cookie recipe and they are even better the second day!
My sister, who is the expert, made the chocolate and vanilla butter cream frosting. So yummy!
Mustaches! Aren't they cute? My Dad has grown one for as long as I can remember, these look remarkably like his!
Even though it was St. Patty's Day, I wanted Spring! So I settled for a few shamrocks on the flowers.

Favorite Sugar Cookie Recipe
1 cup butter
1 cup powdered sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 teaspoon almond or lemon extract
2 cups flour
Cream butter, sugar and egg. Add extracts. Mix in flour 1 c. at a time. Roll out on floured surface 1/4" thick. Cut out cookies and bake at 350 until dry looking and bottoms are lightly brown. Don't over bake.

Decoware Cake Tin

I picked up this darling cake tin this fall. Even though it is a wee bit rough, I couldn't pass up the Fruit! Besides it was a great price!

The Decoware line was made by the Continental Can Company in the 1950s. They made trays, cake tins, flour/sugar canisters, bread boxes, picnic baskets, wastepaper baskets and the like. All in a variety of patterns; flowers, fruit, wheat, stripes, plaid, stars and more fruit and flowers! The Continental Can Co was started in 1904, survived the Great Depression, went into government work during WWII and was a multi-million dollar business by the 1950s. It had major factories in New York and Chicago.
A cheery addition to the kitchen!

First Day of Spring!!

Do you remember these pictures from last year? I posted them on April 14, 2011.
TODAY, March 20th, the forsythia and daffodils are blooming! Can you believe it?! I can't remember a spring being this early, at least not in the last 4-8 years. It is so exciting!! I was talking to someone and they commented on the mood everyone is in. We are ecstatic! We don't know what do to with ourselves.
I hope we are not the only ones with this lovely weather.
Happy Spring!!

Kitchen Appliance Ads

Late 40s ad for a stove. It is very similar my 1947 GE Stratoliner. It think this ad is probably a few years older. They still have the built in pressure cooker though! Just in case you missed the original post or would like to revisit, "1947 Stratoliner".

A two page ad for Norge appliances. Including an oven with an Electric Oven Lighter! What will they think of next?! Don't forget to notice the cute aprons!

Red Cross Knitting

I have been doing a little genealogy with my sister lately. We came across this newspaper article. It made me laugh! Cynthia French is my 4th great grandmother. Dated Aug 3, 1918 in the mist of the first World War.

1940s Nurse Aprons

Nursing and aprons have been closely connected for centuries. Today's post highlights the 1940s. Naturally, nursing was very important during WWII. There were Red Cross Nurses, Army Nurses, Cadet Nurses and I am sure a few more.

Still of nurses from the movie "Christmas in Connecticut".

 Red Cross apron or coverall.
 Red Cross nurses' uniform pattern.
